Balfour Beatty believes the investment made in training and development, by all operating companies throughout the Group, is vital to maintain competitive advantage. We are committed to utilising - through education, training and development - the full talents, skills and abilities of all employees.

In addition to opportunities to learn and develop 'through the job', our operating companies run in-house courses covering a wide variety of training needs. These include technical, commercial and management skills and health, safety and environment matters. External development programmes are also undertaken, using a variety of sources including colleges, business schools and training consultants.

Employees are also encouraged to pursue, on their own initiative, continuing education and training, particularly when this leads to vocational and professional qualifications relevant to their work.

Many of our UK businesses have attained the 'Investors in People' standard and others are committed to achieving the standard in the near future.

Retaining and developing our employees is a key business objective across the group. To this end we aim to promote from within, wherever possible. We work to ensure that career routes are clear and will provide the challenge, development and progression that our employees demand.

There are many examples of employees progressing their careers across the company in all disciplines. Career progression is facilitated by various frameworks and support that are available in our operating companies. This includes using secondments and placements, supporting work-based learning programmes and sponsoring employees to undertake professional or vocational qualifications.
