The £12.7 million contract is for the provision of a new world-class International Children’s Eye Centre (ICEC), which is due for completion in 2006. Fryar House, the site of the ICEC, will be demolished in the late summer, and actual building work will start towards the end of this year. The building will be positioned adjacent to the existing eye hospital and the Institute of Ophthalmology, at the City Road site in central London.
ProCure 21 embraces a partnering ethos amongst all of its participants including Moorfields, who have been developing their plans for the new facility with a team of cutting edge designers and in consultation with young patients and staff.
The design team, lead by Penoyre and Prasad Architects, set out to create an uplifting design for the new facility. The building will incorporate outpatient and day case areas, a paediatric research unit and hostel accommodation for patients and their families. There will be a strong emphasis on light and space, which aims to create a welcoming and child friendly environment. Key areas will be linked to the main hospital site, offering direct access for staff and patients.
The opening of the ICEC will enhance paediatric services at Moorfields, ensuring that the 20,000 children seen each year are treated separately from adult patients and in surroundings that make their visit to the hospital as easy and pleasant as possible.
The Trust is a centre of excellence and a national resource both in terms of research facilities in partnership with the Institute of Ophthalmology (UCL) and as an international teaching and training centre. Moorfields Eye Hospital became one of the country’s first Foundation Trusts on 1st April 2004.
