Mike Peasland to succeed Philip Cleaver as Managing Director of Mansell

17 Mar 2004

Balfour Beatty, the international engineering, construction and services group, announces today that Mike Peasland, currently Managing Director of Balfour Beatty subsidiary, Balfour Kilpatrick, is to succeed Philip Cleaver as Managing Director of Mansell, the leading UK construction and construction services business acquired by Balfour Beatty at the end of 2003. The appointment is effective from Monday 5 April 2004.

Philip Cleaver, who has been instrumental in developing and implementing Mansell’s highly successful growth strategy over the last five years and has led the company through the acquisition process and the early stages of the integration of Mansell into the Balfour Beatty Group, will leave the Group at the end of April following a handover period, after which he intends to enjoy a well-earned rest.

Mike Peasland, who is 52, joined the Balfour Beatty Group in 1970. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Building. After holding a series of increasingly senior management positions in Balfour Beatty Construction, Balfour Beatty’s established building construction business, he became Managing Director of Balfour Kilpatrick in February 1999. During his time in this position, the business has been reorganised and rebased to better service its chosen market and its profit performance has shown radical improvement.

Commenting on the announcement today, Mike Welton, Chief Executive of Balfour Beatty, said: “We are delighted to have acquired a high-quality, well-managed business in Mansell and we are extremely grateful to Philip for the central role that he has played in bringing the company into the Balfour Beatty Group. We wish him every success for the future and look forward to taking Mansell forward under Mike Peasland’s proven leadership.”

Philip Cleaver said: “It has been a privilege to lead Mansell through a very exciting period and I owe great thanks to everyone whose work enabled us to achieve our objectives. I am impressed at the way the Balfour Beatty senior team have managed the acquisition, the early transition and the way we have been made welcome. I have no doubt that Mansell and its employees will continue to flourish within the enlarged group.”

An announcement regarding Mike Peasland’s successor as Managing Director of Balfour Kilpatrick will be made shortly.
