21 May 2002

Following the publication in the Daily Mirror of Monday 20 May of a number of photographs and accompanying text suggesting that a stretch of the line between Kelvedon and Witham on the main line between London and Colchester was dangerous, Balfour Beatty Rail Maintenance staff conducted a scheduled patrol of that line during Monday 20 May.

This process revealed no safety critical issues. As a result of the patrol, a small number of items (as is normally the case following a patrol) were added to the forward work register for completion over the next eight weeks.
