Balfour Beatty Appointed For Rail Work At Terminal 5

Balfour Beatty plc, the international engineering, construction and services company, announces today that an integrated joint venture of its subsidiaries, Balfour Beatty Rail Projects and Balfour Kilpatrick, has been selected as supplier by BAA for the Heathrow Airport Terminal 5 Rail, Trackwork, Traction Power and Mechanical & Electrical Works package. It is anticipated that the contract package will be worth approximately £46 million.

The contract is part of the development of a fifth terminal at Heathrow Airport which is crucial to BAA’s aim of easing congestion and improving the passenger experience at Heathrow.

Mike Welton, Chief Executive of Balfour Beatty, commenting today, said:

“We are delighted to have been appointed as a supplier for this important project, which will utilise Balfour Beatty’s multi-disciplinary and major project skills in an area where we have very significant experience and expertise.”

The package of works involved in the contract encompasses the rail and tunnel systems required for an extension to the Heathrow Express and Piccadilly Line Railways to the new terminal. The project will involve Trackwork, Traction Power and Mechanical & Electrical services (including ventilation, fire detection/suppression, drainage and lighting) associated with the new 2.5 km twin bore tunnels that will be constructed and connected to the existing working railways.

The work will commence with the definition design of the Project. The new railway facilities are scheduled to open for public use with the rest of the Project.
