- In 2001, the Balfour Beatty Rail Projects and Balfour Kilpatrick joint venture was awarded the contract for the rail and tunnel systems extending the Heathrow Express and Piccadilly Line railways to Heathrow’s new Terminal 5 (T5)
- The package comprised of the rail, trackwork, traction power and mechanical and electrical (M&E) works for a total of 10km of new railway being installed underground
- This railway was either in bored tunnels or cut and cover sections and connected to the existing working railways
- Balfour Kilpatrick was responsible for the M&E services for the Heathrow Express and Piccadilly Line rail tunnel extensions to T5, the T5 rail station and the track transit system (TTS) between the terminals
- Balfour Beatty Construction was appointed the production leader and fit-out contractor for the rail station and passenger interchange
- In July 2007, the joint venture team successfully handed over the Piccadilly Line extension to London Underground
- Opening in March 2008 and one of the largest construction projects in Europe, the new £4.3 billion terminal will cater for 30 million passengers a year
- Mansell’s airports division has managed and delivered over 200 different spaces at T5, with an overall value in excess of £44 million
- In addition, Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering was awarded the construction of the Stage 2 Heathrow T5 spur road
- This was part of the £148 million Highways Agency contract to widen the M25 between Junctions 12 and 15
