In March 2007, Balfour Beatty was awarded the contract for a
new five-year alliance, to upgrade and develop the electricity
transmission network in the eastern half of England
The alliance is likely to be worth approximately £550
million, with an option to extend it for a further five years
The contract is one of two overhead line and four sub-station
alliance contracts, one of the largest procurement exercises
undertaken by National Grid
It supports National Grid’s increased investment in the
electricity transmission network and contributes to long-term
security of supply
The work is required to connect new infrastructure, such as
wind farms and new generation plant, to the Grid, as well as
enhance and replace existing assets
