Balfour Beatty provides refurbishment and construction services for social housing projects throughout the UK. It is a market to which the Government has pledged £47 billion, up to 2010, to upgrade affordable housing. Customers include a range of the UK's registered social landlords and local authorities.

Social housing sector work is carried out in conditions where tenants are still resident. Disruption to residents' lives must be kept to a minimum and their involvement encouraged. Further benefit is often brought to the local communities through supporting local causes or introducing training and employment schemes.

The UK Government's Decent Homes initiative aims to bring all existing social housing up to a decent standard by 2010. Balfour Beatty Refurbishment is heavily involved in this scheme, working for clients such as Hammersmith & Fulham Housing Management Services (HFHMS). This follows the company's completion of over 1,500 properties in two years for Hounslow Homes in west London, another Decent Homes contract.

Mansell delivers national and regional development and regeneration programmes. The value of its framework contracts is now more than £800m, including relationships with Catalyst, Riverside, Your Homes Newcastle and Metropolitan Housing in the Midlands.
