Balfour Beatty has significant experience in airport infrastructure development in the UK, US, Dubai and Hong Kong. We have, for example, undertaken major airport projects at Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Hong Kong, Dubai and Miami. Projects range from major improvement and expansion schemes to interior fit-out and maintenance.
Mansell has had a framework contract with BAA since 1999 and has played a key role in the development programmes at Heathrow, Gatwick and the BAA Scottish airports. Since the start of this agreement, Mansell has worked on around 65 different projects.
In January 2007, Balfour Beatty Capital, through the Regional and City Airports (RCA) consortium, acquired Exeter International Airport. Balfour Beatty Management was a key partner in this project, developing the business model and capital expenditure plans.
In Scotland, Raynesway Construction, part of Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering, works in partnership with BAA on maintenance projects at Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow airports. The runway extension at Sumburgh airport in the Shetlands, carried out by Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering, was completed three months early and under budget.
In the US, we have been involved in a wide range of projects including: O’Hare and Midway International Airports, Chicago; Seattle-Tacoma (Sea-Tac) Airport; and Orlando International Airport.
We also have a long-term presence in Hong Kong, including the £800 million terminal building for Chek Lap Kok Airport, plus trackwork and electrification for the fast rail link between Hong Kong and the airport. Other work included the construction of the East Hall expansion structures and reconfiguration of the departure hall at Hong Kong Airport.
