Balfour Beatty Corporate Responsibility Report 2006

main content

Investors

We seek to provide shareholders with improving returns and the information they need to make well informed investment decisions.

We run an active shareholder engagement programme involving regular roadshows and one to one meetings. During 2006, senior executives held over 100 meetings with shareholders (2005: 94), representing, in aggregate, approximately 60% of the ordinary issued share capital. All financial presentations are webcast in order to ensure that they are accessible to all shareholder groups and other interested parties.

Our registrars, Computershare Investor Services PLC, have introduced a facility enabling Balfour Beatty shareholders to access details of their shareholding over the internet, subject to complying with an identity check.

In a further effort to save paper, contribute to a better environment and give a child a chance to plant a tree, we support eTree, a programme designed to promote shareholder communication through electronic means rather than by paper. Every shareholder who switches to electronic communications is rewarded with a sapling planted on behalf of Woodland Trust's Tree for All campaign.

We are a long-term supporter of the charity ShareGift which offers a solution to those shareholders who have small holdings of shares which are otherwise uneconomic to sell, by accepting these shares as donations, selling them when possible and using the proceeds to make donations to a wide range of other UK charities. We regularly promote this free service to shareholders.

In relation to fraud prevention, we have also provided shareholders with clear guidance regarding the measures that they should take, both to protect themselves from unauthorised firms offering unsolicited “investment advice” who have targeted UK investors, and from the growing risk of identity fraud.

Chairman’s and Chief Executive’s statement

In 2006, we were awarded the Quality in Construction prize for the best Corporate Responsibility programme in the industry. Such recognition is gratifying, but we remain determined to continue to make progress in all aspects of corporate responsibility.
