Environmental management systems

Goals

We aim continuously to increase environmental engagement and to embed environmental management systems into our business.

The management system for each operating company identifies and addresses specific environmental issues relevant to their operations.

All the suppliers have worked to a "groundbreaking" agreement which encouraged working in an integrated project team with a common culture which included common environmental goals. Read the full case study

Our operating companies are certified to ISO 14001, or have equivalent formal environmental management systems.

Performance

  • While the majority of UK operations are now certified, each year our structure changes through acquisition, disposal and reorganisation. Newly acquired businesses are required to achieve ISO 14001 as soon as practicable
  • In 2006 96% of UK operating companies have achieved ISO 14001 certification (94% in 2005, 87% in 2004, 79% in 2003, and 76% in 2002)

  • Our US businesses have developed formal environmental management systems which are implemented across all projects and are subject to independent audit
  • ISO 14001 is in place in 52% of our European operations
  • 93% of our Hong Kong operations maintain certification to ISO 14001

  • To continue to quantify and understand our environmental impacts globally
  • To encourage environmental engagement among our supply chain
  • To investigate the causes of incidents and ensure that lessons are learnt and shared
  • To develop further our approach to sustainable construction
