How do you encourage people into the construction industry and help the local community at the same time?
This was a question that the local team in Mansell, Gateshead asked and together with Newcastle City Council came up with a scheme that offered individuals the chance of pre-apprenticeship training.
One candidate was Terry Brown. Twenty eight years old, Terry was unemployed for eight months before starting his apprenticeship with Mansell and is now working towards an Intermediate Construction Award and an NVQ Level 2 in joinery, spending one day a week at college and the remainder of the week with Mansell.
Andy Elliott, Employment Development Officer at the Council, is a champion of the scheme. He said: "The Adult Apprenticeship Scheme is an excellent opportunity for unemployed city residents to learn a real construction skill, whilst earning a real wage. Terry is now looking forward to a secure future, as a skilled tradesman."
